Stereotype Series: Gay People Are Just People Who Can't Afford Sex Change Operations
68Thank You
Welcome to the first hub in the Stereotype Series! The first stereotype I have decided to debunk is the stereotype that Gay People Are Just People Who Can't Afford Sex Change Operations. I'd like to thank sneakorocksolid for giving me my first stereotype for this series.
Why This Stereotype Is False
This stereotype was rather easy to debunk. There are so many wealthy people in the LGBTQ community who could definitely afford sex change operations. It's pretty obvious that these people don't want to be the opposite sex.
Let's start with...
Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie, an Oscar-winning actress, not only plays lesbian and bisexual roles in movies, she is also openly bisexual. Her last relationship with a woman was in 1996 when she dated her Foxfire co-star, Jenny Shimizu.
Angelina starred as a lesbian in the movie Gia in 1998. This was one of my favorite movies she played in, personally. She is also known for her bad girl roles in movies like: Foxfire, Girl, Interrupted, and Tomb Raider.
With so few bisexual and lesbian women out in the Hollywood eye, one can't help but to look up to her for being a humanitarian, tough, and incredibly sexy. (Sorry, just had to add the sexy part in)
With a net worth of over 70 million dollars, she could definitely afford a sex change operation if she wanted one.
Boy George
Boy George, a British singer/songwriter, helped give androgyny an international stage with the success of Culture Club in the 1980s.
Not exactly a role model, Boy George came out as gay in May of 2009 after being released from prison for the assault and false imprisonment of a male prostitute.
I couldn't find his net worth anywhere, but I assure you, this man could afford a sex change operation if he wanted one.
Ellen Degeneres & Portia de Rossi
Ellen Degeneres is an actress and a judge on American Idol. She also hosts her very own TV talk show. She is known for being a bubbly, upbeat, and happy person.
Portia de Rossi starred on Ally McBeal and Arrested Development.
Ellen and Portia met began their relationship in 2004 and got married on August 16, 2008 in Los Angeles, where gay marriage is legal. You go, girls! Too bad not all of us can afford to live in California, haha!
Portia and Ellen are both very rich and very happy, especially with each other. Portia has gushed about Ellen changing the world in many television interviews and Ellen has said they were just supposed to be together. No sex change operations in the future for these two!
Although there are rumors that Ellen and Portia split, they were both on Oprah recently where Ellen was quoted: "Anybody who's married knows there's a difference. There's an anchor, there's a safety. I'm going to be with her until the day I die and I know that."
Where Did This Stereotype Come From?
This stereotype most likely comes from people like Rupaul, who I absolutely love, by the way! The important thing to remember is that, although Rupaul was a gay man before her sex change operation, she was also a transvestite/drag queen. Rupaul always wanted to be a woman.
Gay men are men who are attracted to men. Most do not want to be women.
Lesbians are women who are attracted to women. Most do not want to be men, unless you ask us when we're on our periods. That's about the only time I'd ever say it would be nice to be a man!
Epilogue
So there you have it, not all people in the LGBTQ community want sex changes. Of course, there are a few who do, like the marvelous Rupaul I mentioned above.
Do you think this hub got my point across effectively?

Glad to see Punk alive and well still! It is hard but try to remember that bigots are people too! :D
Great hub!
I really hate stereotypes.
Because I am a lesbian with short hair, people automatically assume that I must behave like the man in the relationship. Which is completely wrong, I just happen to have short hair because it suits my face better. AND I LOVE my make up and feminine girly things.
People are idiots. Some gays want to be made into the oppisete sex, some don't. It is like the idea that all gay men lisp, are limpwristed and love showtunes. There are some very masculine gay men.
This submittal qualifies as "pretty stupid."
